ITA Language Assessment

ITA Language Assessment (ILA)

All international graduate students are required to participate in an ITA Language Assessment (ILA) before beginning any teaching assistantship. The purpose of the 30—minute assessment is to determine an ITA’s level of English proficiency and, once determined, inform ITAs and their departments of required CTE-ITA course work and appropriate teaching assignments. The ILA is designed to enable ITAs to deliver a speech sample that is representative of their true linguistic abilities. It consists of an interview and a brief teaching sample. Students should arrange for an ILA at least one semester before scheduled TA duties.

The oral proficiency portion of the ILA is conducted using a modified version of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The ACTFL OPI is currently used worldwide by academic institutions, government agencies, and private corporations for purposes such as: academic placement, student assessment, program evaluation, professional certification, hiring and promotional qualification. The ACTFL OPI is recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE) for the awarding of college credit. For more information please visit: www.languagetesting.com

Scheduling An ILA Online

Using your campus Oracle account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to File > Agenda > Open.
  2. In the "Open Agenda" window, type ITAP.
  3. Click OK and a new agenda window will open for ITAP.
  4. Go to the appropriate dates listed above.
  5. Suggest an ILA time: All interviews are half an hour long and can only be made on the half hour (e.g. 10, 10:30). While scheduling please include the student's name, your department name (or abbreviation) and if needed, the department or faculty representative's name that will attend the assessment.
  6. Please approve the request to automatically notify the CTE-ITA via email of your request.
  7. The CTE-ITA will be sent your suggestion and either accept or deny it.

Once the CTE-ITA has accepted the meeting, it will turn green, and your meeting is scheduled. All meetings must be accepted and confirmed by the CTE-ITA. Please do not suggest a meeting and plan to attend unless your proposal has been confirmed.

If your suggestion is denied, the CTE-ITA will contact you via email or phone about another time.

  • The CTE-ITA will respond to you only as needed. No response (or an accepted meeting in Oracle indicated by green) means your ILA is scheduled.
  • This meeting will automatically appear in your agenda.
  • Please do not doublebook entries.

If you have any questions about scheduling please contact Leslie Williams at itap@cornell.edu.

If you do not have an Oracle account please follow the CIT instructions to request one. Once you have an account, come back to this site and follow the scheduling directions above.
