Syllabus Analysis & Review

The CTE Faculty Program provides faculty members with support for overall course design. Faculty who are in the process of revising courses can seek individualized consultation to review their syllabi with CTE staff. We also can provide workshops for departments or college faculty on course design and syllabus development. These can be arranged by contacting David Way (dgw2_at_cornell.edu).

Course Design and Planning Materials

You may download the Syllabus Template (doc) if you'd like to follow some recommended best practices for syllabus construction. The document is self-explanatory and provides a structure for developing a course syllabus.

To assist you in writing learning objectives, Bloom's Taxonomy (pdf) of Educational Objectives provides some useful verbs to write objectives for different levels of learning.

For general course planning, the Course Materials Checklist (pdf) is helpful to review the components of your course and the elements of your syllabus to make sure you haven't forgotten anything that may be helpful to your students.

If you are just beginning to design a new course, the Course Planning Questions (pdf) provides a series of questions through a logical progression that can help you avoid common mistakes in course design.
