This workshop will provide a forum to discuss central responsibilities for being an excellent teacher, including advising, office hours, and grading. This workshop will help you avoid making common advising mistakes, learn how to make the best use of your grading time, and understand fundamental assessment principles.

Listening & Communication Skills in Teaching
Listening and communication are essential skills for TA’s, whether answering questions in class or talking one-on-one with students. Expand your listening, problem solving and decision-making skills, and learn about a wide range of campus referral services and resources. Hands-on exercises are used to develop important communication skills for teaching and for other professional and personal interactions.

*Teaching with Online Course Management Systems
Technology has become an increasingly important part of teaching, both inside and outside of the classroom, yet it can be daunting for TAs and faculty to choose among the various online course management systems available. This workshop will discuss various software options available to you (i.e. Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle) and how to foster student participation through various web-based media, formats and activities.

Teaching & Leadership Development: Finding the Leader in You
What are the qualities of a good leader?  What are the barriers to effective leadership?  In this session, participants will explore effective leadership principles and approaches, and their application in diverse teaching contexts. Small group discussions and role plays will help participants identify and maximize their own leadership styles.

Enhancing Interactive Teaching & Learning
Students learn better when they are actively involved in class.  How can you make your teaching more interactive to improve student learning?  This workshop will provide several methods you can use in the classroom to increase students’ active participation in learning.

*Designing an Electronic Teaching Portfolio
The idea of a Teaching Portfolio grows out of the conception that teaching is an integral part of academic scholarship, which also includes research, public and professional service. This workshop will assist TAs with documenting their teaching through electronic portfolio development. A Teaching Portfolio includes both work samples of one’s teaching and reflective commentary on those samples. TAs have found that teaching portfolios have helped them secure teaching positions at the completion of their graduate work.

Developing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy
Most faculty positions require applicants to submit a statement of teaching philosophy. This workshop will focus on core components of a teaching philosophy statement and share samples of teaching statements, similar to what you might be asked to produce when applying for faculty positions in higher education.

Preparing to Interview
Want to ace your next interview? How can you ensure interview success? Interview skills are the key to landing you the position you want. This workshop will help participants to develop their skills through mock interview exercises and group analysis. This workshop will also provide practice tips for a successful interview in professional settings.

Constructing a Syllabus
Becoming an excellent teacher means knowing how to design a learning-centered syllabus.  Participants will learn to assess student needs, determine course goals, and develop a plan for realizing these goals.  This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with instructional resources and a useful template for syllabus design.

Fostering Students' Research Skills & Information Competency
The central component of many courses is a research project. However, this research process can be a challenge for both student and instructor alike. This workshop will assist TA’s in guiding their students through the various steps in the research process, including identifying a research topic, analyzing sources, writing a thesis statement, and completing a research paper.

*Teaching with Technology
Technology has come to play an important role in university courses. In this workshop, participants will explore various teaching technologies, such as YouTube, Powerpoint, blogs, discussion boards, and Clickers. Participants will also discuss how to choose tools that meet their individual needs and bring about better student learning.

Assessing Learning Outcomes
You have reached the end of your course this semester: but have your students really learned what you aimed to teach them? This workshop will help you find an answer to this question, introducing a number of assessment techniques to examine your students’ learning outcomes and help you to improve your teaching.
