Faculty Institute for Diversity

The Faculty Institute for Diversity:

  • Brings tenured and tenure-track faculty together to engage in complex discussions about aspects of diversity.
  • Creates a network of teachers and scholars who can serve as a resource to one another on matters of diversity and education.
  • Supports faculty in incorporating diversity elements into new or revised courses.

The idea for a Faculty Institute at Cornell emerged from the 2006 Teagle Foundation study, “Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in College Completion and Achievement: What Works and Why,” which argued that a Faculty Institute:

  • takes “a proactive approach to diversity.”
  • “focuses on creating or revising syllabi, not just talking about diversity.”
  • “offers a clear mechanism for infusing diverse perspectives and experiences into the curriculum.”

About the Faculty Institute for Diversity

Who? The institute is aimed at faculty who have not yet made diversity a major focus of their teaching but are interested in gaining insights on how to accomplish this. The institute is also appropriate for faculty in the sciences who wish to adopt principles of active learning, learning styles, and other pedagogical approaches to promote an inclusive classroom environment. We invite interested faculty who hold the title of lecturer/senior lecturer to interact directly with CTI in advance of applying.

What?  The institute is a 2-day retreat, and the agenda has been put together by a committee of Cornell faculty members. Cornell faculty members and program representatives from across campus, as well as outside experts, will facilitate sessions. Kim Kenyon, Associate Director of the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) will guide discussions.

When?
January 16-18, 2018.

Where? 166N Martha Van Rensselaer HalL

Applications are due by January 2, 2018

How?  Through readings and facilitated discussions, faculty will begin the process of transforming their courses to reflect various aspects of diversity. Faculty will come together after the institute at dinners and events throughout the year to reconnect and discuss the progress made in transforming their courses.

In addition, participants will submit a copy of the final syllabus for the course they are creating or revising (within 1 year of the institute), as well as a report on how they have applied insights/materials garnered from participation in the institute to their teaching in general. The report is an important document for the continuation of the institute.

A committee of faculty with experience in issues of diversity will select participants based on the proposals submitted. Care will be given to include faculty who represent a broad range of disciplines.
