ITAP Summer Program
The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) offers a compulsory summer training program to support all incoming international students whose first language is not English and who will assume TA duties during the fall semester.
Please note that a TOEFL iBT speaking score of 28 or higher or an IELTS speaking score of 8.5 or higher does not exempt students from participating in the summer program.
The ITA Summer program:
- Is a weeklong intensive program designed to support first-time international teaching assistants (ITAs) in preparing for the variety of instructional roles they may undertake while at Cornell.
- Offers a high level of individual guidance, small group sessions, and activities designed to help students familiarize themselves to Cornell’s campus and culture.
- Provides students with the opportunity to develop their oral communication and/or pedagogical skills, and to critically examine the impact of culture on teaching and learning.
As part of the summer program, students will participate in an ITA Language Assessment (ILA). Depending on the results of the assessment, students will be assigned to courses in communication, and/or pedagogy. Based on the university guidelines for assessing oral communication, the ILA also determines the required ITAP course work and allowable teaching assignments. Students who demonstrate need for further support with their oral proficiency will be required to enroll in additional instruction during the fall semester prior to, or concurrent to holding TA duties.
Participants will receive a stipend of $500 upon successful completion of the program.
When should participants arrive?
Students should plan to arrive in Ithaca no later than Monday, August 7, 2017, to participate in this program.
What about housing?
Students who receive on-campus university housing in the 2017-18 academic year may be able to move into their housing assignment as early as August 7, if availability allows. There will be no temporary housing available. To be considered for on-campus housing, you must complete and submit a housing application to the Housing Office as soon as possible.
Housing is not guaranteed and is assigned according to the date the housing application is received at the Housing Office.
